Mission

Define public affairs vision enterprise-wide

Tour of Duty

Transform public affairs into a strategic partner that anticipates regulatory shifts

About This Job Family

People in this job family own the corporate narrative—shaping how the company is perceived by investors, analysts, employees, regulators, and the public. From earnings calls and press releases to internal town halls and executive speeches, they craft messaging that builds trust, manages reputation, and aligns stakeholders. Great corporate communications turns complex stories into clear signals.

What You'll Do

Public affairs professionals manage the intersection of the company and government—leading regulatory communications, policy advocacy, government testimony, and public-facing compliance narratives. They ensure the company's voice is heard in policy debates that affect the business.

  • Define the public affairs vision for enterprise-wide regulatory excellence
  • Shape industry standards through policy thought leadership and coalition building
  • Establish public affairs as a strategic partner to the C-suite
  • Build the next generation of public affairs leadership
  • Define innovation agenda for regulatory intelligence and government analytics
  • Shape board-level regulatory strategy and corporate citizenship narrative

Every responsibility is an accomplishment waiting to happen. The question is: will you own the outcome, or just do the task?

AI as an Accelerator

AI isn't a skill we call out. It's invisible in the accomplishment but easily visible in the velocity and scale of your outcomes. Here's how people in this role are accelerating their work with AI:

  • Building strategic planning systems for regulatory strategy
  • Analyzing industry regulatory trends
  • Creating public affairs architectures for multi-market coverage

The Competencies That Matter

Skills fill your toolbox. Competencies are how you wield them. Three matter most at this level:

1. STRATEGY (3) Strong Strategy skills required at this level.

2. CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS (1) Strong Corporate Communications skills required at this level.

3. LEGAL & COMPLIANCE (1) Strong Legal & Compliance skills required at this level.

The radar shows the full picture. These three are where you need to be undeniable.

Your Journey From Here

Going up? Your next Tour of Duty:

→ Chief Communications Officer (CCO) - Public Affairs (L10) "Establish government relations as competitive advantage in regulated markets"

The L9 → L10 gap is about ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT: • From functional leadership → company leadership • From technical strategy → business strategy • From building teams → building organizations

These are your stretch accomplishments. Start doing L10 work now. When you can prove it with accomplishments, you're ready.

Going sideways? That's valid too.

Up isn't the only direction. It's your career. You own it.
