About This Job Family
People in this job family help employees grow. They design training programs, build learning systems, and create the development experiences that turn potential into performance. Good L&D accelerates careers and builds organizational capability.
What You'll Do
Organization Development professionals improve organizational effectiveness through interventions in culture, structure, and processes. They diagnose organizational issues and design solutions. Success means healthier, more effective organizations.
- • Own OD for business areas or major initiatives
- • Lead complex change management programs
- • Design organizational structures and processes
- • Mentor OD staff on consulting skills
- • Define quality standards for OD work
- • Architect approaches to culture transformation
Every responsibility is an accomplishment waiting to happen. The question is: will you own the outcome, or just do the task?
Manage a Team?
Great managers are practitioners first. The IC responsibilities above are your foundation—the craft you model for your team. Your management responsibilities are additive:
- • Hire L&D professionals who measure impact—not just completion rates
- • Coach business alignment—training must serve strategic priorities
- • Run 1:1s that develop instructional design AND stakeholder management
- • Give feedback on learning outcomes—not just program delivery
- • Remove blockers—fight for budget, learner time, and leadership sponsorship
Your team's accomplishments are your accomplishments. Help them craft S.M.A.R.T wins—specific, measurable, and ready to stand on their own.
AI as an Accelerator
AI isn't a skill we call out. It's invisible in the accomplishment but easily visible in the velocity and scale of your outcomes. Here's how people in this role are accelerating their work with AI:
- → Analyzing effectiveness patterns
- → Building intervention frameworks
- → Creating coaching tools

1. LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT (3) Strong Learning & Development skills required at this level.
2. HUMAN RESOURCES (2) Strong Human Resources skills required at this level.
3. STRATEGY (2) Strong Strategy skills required at this level.
The radar shows the full picture. These three are where you need to be undeniable.
Your Journey From Here
Going up? Your next Tour of Duty:
→ Senior Staff OD Specialist / Senior Manager, Organization Development - Org Development (L5) "Build OD practices that scale"
The L4 → L5 gap is about SCALE and INFLUENCE: • From owning a project → shaping how projects get built • From leading work → leading people who lead work • From shipping features → building systems that outlast you
These are your stretch accomplishments. Start doing L5 work now. When you can prove it with accomplishments, you're ready.
Going sideways? That's valid too.
Up isn't the only direction. It's your career. You own it.
