About This Job Family
People in this job family help employees grow. They design training programs, build learning systems, and create the development experiences that turn potential into performance. Good L&D accelerates careers and builds organizational capability.
What You'll Do
Leadership Development professionals build the leadership capabilities the organization needs at all levels. They design programs that develop current and future leaders. Success means a strong leadership pipeline that drives organizational performance.
- • Serve as the foremost leadership development authority for the enterprise
- • Shape the vision for leadership excellence through strategic expertise
- • Architect operating models for global leadership development
- • Advise executives on leadership pipeline and succession strategy
- • Define the strategic roadmap for leadership investments
- • Develop leadership development leaders through mentorship and knowledge transfer
Every responsibility is an accomplishment waiting to happen. The question is: will you own the outcome, or just do the task?
Manage a Team?
Great managers are practitioners first. The IC responsibilities above are your foundation—the craft you model for your team. Your management responsibilities are additive:
- • Hire L&D professionals who measure impact—not just completion rates
- • Coach business alignment—training must serve strategic priorities
- • Run 1:1s that develop instructional design AND stakeholder management
- • Give feedback on learning outcomes—not just program delivery
- • Remove blockers—fight for budget, learner time, and leadership sponsorship
Your team's accomplishments are your accomplishments. Help them craft S.M.A.R.T wins—specific, measurable, and ready to stand on their own.
AI as an Accelerator
AI isn't a skill we call out. It's invisible in the accomplishment but easily visible in the velocity and scale of your outcomes. Here's how people in this role are accelerating their work with AI:
- → Designing team capabilities
- → Building leadership systems
- → Creating hiring frameworks

Going up? Your next Tour of Duty:
→ VP, Leadership Development - Leadership Development (L8) "Navigate a major leadership transformation"
The L7 → L8 gap is about ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT: • From functional leadership → company leadership • From technical strategy → business strategy • From building teams → building organizations
These are your stretch accomplishments. Start doing L8 work now. When you can prove it with accomplishments, you're ready.
Going sideways? That's valid too.
Up isn't the only direction. It's your career. You own it.
