VP of Product, SMB
VP of Product, SMB
Mission
Own P&L-level outcomes for the SMB business
Tour of Duty
Transform the SMB business from cost center to profitable growth engine
About This Job Family
People in this job family own the 'what' and 'why' of products—defining vision, prioritizing roadmaps, and translating customer needs into features that drive business outcomes. Product management is an inherently inbound function: PMs synthesize customer discovery, user research, market signals, and usage data to determine what to build. They work at the intersection of engineering, design, and go-to-market, balancing competing demands while keeping teams aligned on what matters most.
What You'll Do
SMB Product Managers build products for speed and scale—serving thousands of small businesses that need fast time-to-value and self-serve experiences. The inbound feedback loop is fast: usage analytics, support tickets, and NPS signals replace the long customer discovery cycles of enterprise PM. Unlike enterprise, the SMB motion rewards rapid iteration, PLG mechanics, and data-driven decisions over relationship-based selling. Success means shipping features that drive activation and retention at scale, with minimal touch.
- • Own SMB business outcomes and unit economics
- • Drive organizational transformation to improve growth execution
- • Build scalable systems for continuous optimization
- • Shape company strategy through SMB growth lens
- • Establish operating model for PLG product development
- • Lead cross-functional alignment on growth priorities
Every responsibility is an accomplishment waiting to happen. The question is: will you own the outcome, or just do the task?
AI as an Accelerator
AI isn't a skill we call out. It's invisible in the accomplishment but easily visible in the velocity and scale of your outcomes. Here's how people in this role are accelerating their work with AI:
- → Build cross-functional alignment tools from meeting transcripts
- → Analyze competitive positioning across segments
- → Generate board-level growth narratives

The Competencies That Matter
Skills fill your toolbox. Competencies are how you wield them. Three matter most at this level:
1. PRODUCT MANAGEMENT (2) Strong Product Management skills required at this level.
2. SALES (2) Strong Sales skills required at this level.
3. SOFTWARE ENGINEERING (1) You set technical direction that shapes company architecture. Your decisions have multi-year implications.
The radar shows the full picture. These three are where you need to be undeniable.
Your Journey From Here
Going up? Your next Tour of Duty:
→ SVP of Product, SMB - B2B SMB (L9) "Lead a product-led growth strategy that materially changes company trajectory"
The L8 → L9 gap is about ORGANIZATIONAL IMPACT: • From functional leadership → company leadership • From technical strategy → business strategy • From building teams → building organizations
These are your stretch accomplishments. Start doing L9 work now. When you can prove it with accomplishments, you're ready.
Going sideways? That's valid too.
Up isn't the only direction. It's your career. You own it.
