Mission

Define legal operations strategy and build the function

Tour of Duty

Define the legal operations strategy and build a team that delivers operational excellence across the legal organization.

About This Job Family

Legal & Compliance professionals protect organizations from risk while enabling business growth. From contract negotiation to regulatory compliance, privacy programs to IP strategy, this family encompasses every legal discipline found in modern corporations.

What You'll Do

Legal Operations professionals are the architects of how legal departments actually work. They sit at the intersection of law, technology, and business process — designing intake workflows, implementing contract lifecycle management platforms, optimizing outside counsel spend, and building the analytics that transform legal from a cost center into a strategic function. Legal Ops professionals aren't practicing law; they're making legal departments run like well-oiled machines.

  • Define legal operations strategy and multi-year technology roadmap
  • Negotiate enterprise legal technology contracts and manage vendor portfolio
  • Establish legal department operating models and service delivery frameworks
  • Lead large-scale change management initiatives across the legal organization
  • Design alternative fee arrangements and value-based outside counsel programs
  • Build and mentor a legal operations team across multiple functions

Every responsibility is an accomplishment waiting to happen. The question is: will you own the outcome, or just do the task?

Manage a Team?

Great managers are practitioners first. The IC responsibilities above are your foundation—the craft you model for your team. Your management responsibilities are additive:

  • Hire lawyers who say 'yes, and here's how'—not just 'no'
  • Coach business partnership—legal must enable, not just protect
  • Run 1:1s that develop both legal expertise and commercial instincts
  • Give feedback that balances risk management with business enablement
  • Remove blockers—fight for resources, outside counsel budget, and exec access

Your team's accomplishments are your accomplishments. Help them craft S.M.A.R.T wins—specific, measurable, and ready to stand on their own.

AI as an Accelerator

Legal operations is at the forefront of AI adoption in the legal industry. From contract analysis to predictive spend modeling, AI tools are transforming every aspect of how legal departments operate. Legal Ops professionals are uniquely positioned to evaluate, implement, and govern these tools.

  • Define the AI strategy for legal operations and drive enterprise adoption
  • Negotiate AI vendor contracts and evaluate build-vs-buy for legal AI tools
  • Design human-in-the-loop workflows that balance AI efficiency with legal judgment

Your Career Record

Your career journal is your professional memory. Track what you accomplished, what you learned, and what impact you made — one entry at a time.

In Legal Operations, your accomplishments span technology implementations, process improvements, vendor negotiations, and the analytics that prove the legal department's strategic value. Document them here.

Your Journey From Here

Going up? Your next Tour of Duty:

→ Director, Legal Operations - Legal Ops (L6) "Drive AI and automation adoption across the legal department, partnering with the General Counsel to transform how legal services are delivered."

The L5 → L6 gap is about SCALE and INFLUENCE: • From owning a project → shaping how projects get built • From leading work → leading people who lead work • From shipping features → building systems that outlast you

These are your stretch accomplishments. Start doing L6 work now. When you can prove it with accomplishments, you're ready.

Going sideways? That's valid too.

Up isn't the only direction. It's your career. You own it.
